Being the fairly strange person that I am,
I seem to have an affinity for very rare animals.
Like so...

Gryphons: One of the worlds most fascinating animals. From their beginnings in the ancient middle east through their evolution into Mercedes Lackey's intelligent man-made creations, gryphons have fascinated through the centuries.
Grypons were originally derived from the Persian God Simurgh, who was similar in type, but winged and in the shape of a bird; a kind of peacock with the head of a dog and the claws of a lion.
Gryphons build nests of gold, but instead of laying eggs for some odd and bizarre reason known only to themselves they place agates within the nest - don't ask - I haven't a clue. They were also known to hoard treasure similar to their draconic brothers. Their feathers, beak and claws were said to have magical and/or healing properties. People would make drinking cups of a gryphons claws in search of immortality.
All of the above made them very tempting to hunters. Their desirability as parts probably has something to do with their extreme rareness in today's world.
According to Persian legend, the gryphon is so old that it has seen the world destroyed three times over. In all that time, he has learned so much that he is thought to possess the knowledge of all ages.
