Mare
Precursor to the NightMare

This doll is in the home of a private collector and not available for sale or duplication

The modern English word nightmare originates from the old Anglo-Saxon mare, originally a demonic female spirit who attacked people in their sleep. A popular image associated with the mare is the creature sitting upon her victim's chest. In England she evolved into The Old Hag, a witch whose soul left her body at night. People wasting away from "consumption", a disease now known as tuberculosis, were thought to be victims of the mare.

In Scandinavian lore, such a night visitor is known as the mara. She is sometimes described as an ugly troll-like spirit. But there are also tales where she appears as a beautiful woman and becomes her victim's lover.

In Slavic lore, there is the mora who is always a terrifying night spirit. The Mora also appears in Greek folk lore, but is sometimes called the Ephilaties, a name derived from a Greek word that means "to leap upon."

Mare has been given a full makeover, all of her factory paint removed and her face re-painted with artist quality acrylics and sealers. She now has amber eyes and copper lips with the barest hint of orange eyeshadow and feathered brows. Her hair was left in it's original style, it just fit!

Mare's skirt consists of six panels of alternating black and pale orange, in three different materials. She wears hand beaded earrings and bracelets from which hangs her bat winged cape. The face frame has beaded 'claws' and is wired so you can form it any way you like...

Her stand was hand made by

Yes, it's now a Google group - due to the great screw up of 2010 if you DID belong to the original Yahoo group, you were deleted (by Yahoo, not me) without notice, Google may not be as 'click and point' user friendly, but at least they won't delete the group arbitrarily?
