Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giant, Angurboda.
She is the sister of Fenrir (Fenris-wolf) and Jormungand (the Midgard Serpent).
She was expelled from Åsgard by the all-father Wotan (or Odin) and settled far to the north,
beneath one of the three roots of the sacred ash tree Yggdrasil.
A subterranean realm of the dead was created there (sources differ over precisely WHO created said realm)
- over which Hel has sole dominion. This realm is known as Neiflheim.
All those who die of illnes or old age are given to Hel, where they lead a sad, shadowy existance.
The festive halls of Valhalla are reserved for the brave and valourous in battle.
Hel serves as a guide through the shadow land of the world of the reaper.
She is the embodiment of entropy; things wind down to nothingness in her realm.
She is the power of water to wear down the earth and of frost to heft boulders.
She has no connotation of punishment or evil about her
other than that which we inflect upon ourselves when we encounter the ebb tide or the fallow field.
She is the true dark mother.
When Ragnarok (the final battle of the world) comes, Hel and her army of the dead will battle on the side of chaos against the Æsir.

DETAILS

Hel wears malachite on her necklace and her ring - as well as on her staff.
The tip of her staff is a black crystal. Her sandles are beaded copper wire.

Hel's dress is completely hand stitched, from a hand drafted pattern, of silver shot black crepe. Her bodice and hem are edged in cording. Her cape is of black nylon with an 8oz leather shoulder piece - the leather is also edged in the same cording.
Under duress I MIGHT admit to borrowing (lock, stock and way cool headdress) design concepts from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. :-D

Hel's face has been re-sculpted and given a complete makeover with artist quality acrylic paints and sealer. Both hands have been slightly remolded.
